Art of New Zealand – November 2011

This season Grove Art Online is pleased to present new material devoted to art in New Zealand—a rapidly growing area of study, exhibition, and interest. The New Zealand art update serves as a pathway into a rich and diverse field of inquiry; it represents an acknowledgement of the wealth of scholarly and artistic activity in this arena in recent years.

This project includes contributions from 15 international scholars and more than 55 extraordinary art images. It covers art from the 13th-century to the present and a wide variety of media: architecture, painting, graphic arts, sculpture, photography, and textiles. Anchoring the update are 12 thematic essays, among them a discussion of art and national identity in New Zealand, the significance of landscape, and Maori-European interactions in art. It also offers over 21 new and updated biographies of significant artists, including Marti Friedlander, Rita Angus, Don Peebles, Colin McCahon, Greer Twiss, and Shane Cotton.

We are delighted that Leonard Bell, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Auckland, served as guest editor for this update. His expertise in cross-cultural interactions and representations served to enliven and enrich the project. We thank the authors, artists, galleries, and museums for their invaluable contributions of new scholarship and images. Special thanks to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and Christchurch Art Gallery for their generosity.

This new scholarship complements Grove’s excellent coverage of the art and culture of New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands—more than 500 articles encompassing regions and countries, art forms, artists, patrons, materials and techniques, archaeological sites, museums and historiography. Grove Art Onlineʼs ongoing editorial program broadens existing areas of coverage and encourages the exploration of international subjects in the field of art history and related disciplines.
