Grove Art is pleased to present a group of 44 new and significantly updated articles on the topic of photography in a global context. This special project was led by Dr. Tanya Sheehan, Associate Professor of Art History at Colby College. Dr. Sheehan is the author of Doctored: The Medicine of Photography in Nineteenth-Century America (2011) and editor of Photography, History, Difference (2014).

This project includes major new subject entries on Vernacular photography, Photojournalism, Photobooks, and Street photography, broadening Grove’s core coverage of the discipline. A group of 13 new biographies cover photographers around the globe including Gideon Mendel, Hércules Florence, Vivian Maier, Uchida Kuichi, and Héctor García, as well as Polaroid Corporation founder Edwin Land and Richard Beard, proprietor of the first commercial photography studio in London. Regional articles have been expanded to include the discussion of photographic practice, with new essays covering China, Japan, Korea, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Norway, and Turkey. Biographies of 15 notable figures have been updated and expanded, including Louis Daguerre, Antoine Claudet, Andreas Gursky, Shinzō Fukuhara, Alexander Gardner, and William Henry Fox Talbot. More than 50 new photographs have been added to Grove in this update, from nineteenth-century albumen prints by Francis Bedford to the engaging rural Arkansas studio photography of Mike Disfarmer to the detailed contemporary photographs of Andreas Gursky. This project also adds iconic images such as Brassaï's portraits of Picasso in his studio and Gordon Parks' 1942 American Gothic.

On behalf of Dr. Sheehan and the Grove editorial team, we thank the dedicated and accomplished scholars who contributed to this update, as well as to the institutions and individuals who generously provided the beautiful new images to illustrate Grove’s texts.
