Luxury codex (New York, Morgan Lib., MS. M. 492), probably funded by Canossa, but commissioned by Abbot William (reg 1080–99) for the monastery of S Benedetto in Polirone, near Mantua. It contains the four Gospels, the Liber Vitae, and other documents related to the abbey. The manuscript was displayed on the main altar of the monastic church during the most important feasts. This is the only Evangeliary produced in northern Italy in the 11th century to be illustrated according to the Byzantine tradition, with a rich Christological cycle.
