American architect and developer. Portman founded companies in architecture, urban design, and interiors, as well as in real estate development, financing, and management. Portman excelled in mixed-use development and the design of urban centres around the world. He acted as planner, financier, broker, and promoter for many of his projects, a practice that was questioned early on by critics, but defended by Portman who argued that financial participation gave the architect more control over the quality of finished buildings and encouraged the application of professional planning standards, at least within the boundaries of the development site....
