Roman site in Italy. It lies about 10 km to the east of Naples and was described by ancient authors (Sisenna: frag. 53; Dionysos of Halikarnassos: I.xliv; Strabo: V.iv.8) as a small fortified town built at the foot of Mt Vesuvius on a spur of land facing the sea, and as a healthy and pleasant place to live because of the south-west winds.
