Portuguese family of rulers, collectors and patrons. Alfonso, 1st Duque de Braganza (1370–1461), was the illegitimate son of John I, King of Portugal (see Aviz, House of family, §1). His great-grandson (1) Jaime, 4th Duque de Braganza, was known primarily as a patron of architecture—military and ecclesiastic—and for the restoration and building of family palaces, notably at Vila Viçosa where he created a literary and humanist court.
