Art legislation involves two key legislative areas—the recognition of intellectual property rights and the protection of cultural properties. After World War II, many countries enacted laws to protect their cultural heritage, and after the 1960s, concern over the destruction of archaeological sites and the looting of art treasures resulted in international treaties and laws to stem the black-market trade.
