Nicolas de Poilly the Elder was the younger brother and pupil of François de Poilly the Elder whose style he imitated. He specialised particularly in portrait engravings and religious subjects, often after French masters. He married Geneviève de Ribancourt, the couple having a large number of children. His death certificate mentions his surviving sons: Charles, Jean, François, Jacques, André and Pierre....
