Subramanyan was influenced by Expres­sionism and Cubism. He uses sand and fragments of marble in his work and divides his compositions into several planes, where fantastical animals rub shoulders with figures, which sometimes have many arms and are reminiscent of Indian divinities. His works are given uniformity by allowing one colour to dominate - blue, ochre or brown. The intense quality of his colours is reminiscent of pastels.
