After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Charles Demuth made his first trip to Europe in 1907-1908, visiting London, Berlin and Paris. He lived in Paris between 1912 and 1914, during which time he followed courses at the Académie Julian and found himself influenced by the Fauves and, more particularly, Matisse. On returning to the USA in 1915, he joined the circle of painters that gravitated around the photographer Alfred Stieglitz and met Marcel Duchamp, who was to be a major influence on his work....
