Maxim Kantor studied at the Polygraphic Institute in Moscow. He developed an Expressionist technique, using an exaggerated style of drawing and clashing colours. His prime theme is the sufferings of long-stay patients in psychiatric hospitals, a theme which he sees as a metaphor for the degradation of the human condition in the face of the absurdity of the modern world.
