Georges Mathieu was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. He left for Versailles in 1933 then, during the war, went to Lille, where he studied law, philosophy and obtained an degree in English. In 1942 he worked as a teacher in a secondary school in Douai. He was then an interpreter and teacher for the American armies in Cambrai, Biarritz and Istres.
