Carmen Arvizu studied drawing, painting, sculpture and engraving at the Universidad nacional autónoma and the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura La Esmeralda, Mexico City. In her paintings she associates wildness with cows, rhinoceroses and elephants and noisy, colourful, dirty towns. She arranges her pictures in polyptychs in which the animal occupies a rectangular or square space, surrounded by others, covered in bright red, violet or black paint. She then adds huge letters, fragments of posters, circus tickets and telephone numbers as references to urban life. The paint is applied with a spatula, allowing any unevenness or scratch marks to become part of the work....
