Along with artists Marshall Glasier, John Wilde, Karl Preibe, Dudley Huppler and Gertrude Abercrombie, Sylvia Fein contributed to a Midwestern form of surrealism known as Magic Realism. Unlike the very cerebral and intellectual strain of Surrealism cultivated in Europe, the Midwestern Magic Realists conceived a comparatively primitive aesthetic that was less concerned with dreams than with narrative and symbolic fantasy....
