Bill Reid was the son of a Haida First Nation mother, Sophie Gladstone Reid, of the Raven/Wolf clan, and an American father, William Ronald Reid. He was to become a leading expert on Haida art and culture and is credited with the modern resurgence of Haida carving, a skill which he had learnt from his maternal grandfather.
