Julio was also a poet, under the pseudonym of Saul Dia, and introduced Expressionism and Surrealism to Portugal. He collaborated on the review Presença. His Expressionism was influenced by Grosz before becoming truly personal, and he painted mainly figures, whose features he deformed.
