Fritz Harnest, who settled in Übersee, was a pupil at the Munich academy and made trips to study in Paris and elsewhere in France. Initially influenced by the Expressionism of Nolde, Harnest moved towards abstraction after the war. His wood engravings, in which the texture of the material is often apparent, influenced his collages, and vice versa. He only exhibited sporadically during the National Socialist era.
