Born 17 January 1866, in Vienne; died 7 January 1931, in Boulogne-sur-Seine.

The son of a stonemason employed on the restoration of monuments in the Rhône valley, Joseph Antoine Bernard accompanied his father from the age of 12, learning the art of direct stone-carving which he was subequently to practice throughout his life.
