From 1980 to 1985, Stephen Barclay studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He divides his time and work between Arbroath in Scotland and Mölln near Lübeck in Germany. He uses a liberated realist technique, painting landscapes that appear to be peaceful but which contain strange objects, including remainders of war, catastrophe and sacrifice: part of an aircraft cabin, a broken monkey cage or the remains of a railway track. The universe of Anselm Kiefer and Markus Lüpertz is a clear influence on Barclay's dreamlike, or nightmarish, landscapes....
