Born 1800, in Windham County (Connecticut); died 1880 or 1881, in Florence.

A distinguished portrait artist and lithographer, Francis Alexander studied under Alexander Robertson, who was the secretary at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York. He lived in Boston and Providence, where he earned a considerable reputation as a portraitist. He went to Europe in 1853 and studied the Italian Primitives; this had an effect on his own style, which became more Naive than Primitive. His landscapes contain few figures and convey a powerful feeling of solitude....
