Born 1841, in Turkey; died 1907.

Painter. Landscapes, still-lifes.

Cheker Ahmet Pacha was a pioneer of Turkish oil painting. He was afforded imperial protection in order to be able to study under Boulanger and Gérôme in 1862. Some of his canvases display the distinct influence of Gustave Courbet, although his expressive naivety puts his work closer to that of Rousseau. His exposure to western artistic techniques did not, however, compromise his oriental affinities....
