Affandi, Kusumalocked

Indonesian, 20th century, male.

Born 1907, in Cirebon (Java); died 1990.

Painter. Figures, scenes with figures, nudes.

Affandi worked at the Seni Rupa Academy in Yogyakarta. He founded the Association of Artists’ Communities in 1946 and the Association of Artists of the People in 1947. At the beginning of the 1950s, he travelled to India on an Indian government grant; he then visited England, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. On his return to Indonesia in 1955 he became a teacher at the fine arts academy in Yogyakarta. One of the best known Indonesian artists, Affandi held several exhibitions on the Indian subcontinent, as well as during his travels around Europe. He was particularly interested in depicting people in their daily surroundings. Prizes include: Ministry for Education and Indonesian Culture prize (1969), Dag Hammarskjoeld prize, Italy (1977) and a gold medal from the Indonesian government.
